Revising Morse Code!

Although it is out of date, amateurs still use it. One of the Worthing club members runs a learning course and I have joined. I have also rejoined the Worthing club. There was a session on the air tonight but I joined rather late. I think it is good exercise for the brain! There are some interesting types who take part, plus a number of old codgers like me who are at present very much in the learning role.

I missed the bab at Farnborough, it would have meant 5 hrs of train!

With the help of 2 of the Surrey LUG I have "easy peasey" on my Eee PC now. This puts Ubuntu on the noteook and is much superior to Xandros (which was on before).

Back to Morse!

I have been encouraged to join a morse group on Tuesday nights. It's probably good to make the brain work a bit. I found a good tutor program on the net and have used it a bit. We are on tomorrow night from 7 pm and I will meet up with one of the men who tutored me years and years ago. He is Graham, G0IOF, a staunch member of the Newhaven Fort Club.

Also contemplating going to Farnborough for a bab meeting on Saturday. The troule is the rather long train journey, shall think about it. Sadly I don't think I will attempt it!

I have been to a "bring a box" session at Guildford with the surrey group. I have also found irs and XChat, where you can have "keyboard conversations" ad lib. I have asked lug admin for permission to start up the littlehampton LUG but no reply as yet.

We had news yesterday that Karen and Richard and Michael are visiting the UK in May! They are going to Anthony first and will be in East Preston about a week later. It will be our pleasure to show them a bit of Sussex and to have them stay with us. It won't be as grand as in Houston but the welcome will be just as good! Just heard today that Karen's Mum is coming too. We shall ask our neighbours if we can make use of their grannie flat. If they have no family coming at that time all will be well!

Monday 16th February

With some help from Peter Dodd I came back on to 2 m and 70 cm with my amateur radio gear. I use a simple home made aerial that I can quickly transform from one band to another. I heard the Worthing net tonight and came in just at the end to get a signal report from Roy.
So getting back to my old tricks?

Saturday 7th February

I have just started a new website...http://www.fhj16.talktalk.net
You might lke to look at it. The reason was to see how talktalk could be persaded to give me one.
I have tried for so long to get help from them and at last sorted it out. They give you 15 Mb of space.

I only used linux programs to write a page and to upload it. I have messed about a lot and almost screwed up the whole thing today. I constructed an alternative site but found that I couldn't get rid of the old data, so had to go back to it.

Anyway we will see how it goes on. Well I had to change the address from fhj17 to fhj16, but that seems to have been done now, so try it out!

5th January 2009

We have not been well and are just starting to recover! Thanks to everyone for their cards wishes and presents! We had seen most of the family before the bug hit us, and after that we just tried to keep going in spite of everything.

Ther are now two extra family members, Gavin Long in Houston, and Ellis James Michaels in New York, congratulations to Kate and Jack in Houston and Emma and Chance in New York.

On 19th Decembmer Stephen's ashes were interred in St Mary's churchyard and a new monument laid to include his name with those of his parents.
